What is Business Continuity?

For many companies Business Continuity is one of two things – remote off-site data storage or investment in a remote ‘duplicate’ office. It is neither. Business Continuity is a subset of Information Security and should be maintained within the ISMS.

Business Continuity is the implementation of properly thought-through and adequately tested contingency procedures. Procedures which ensure that the organisation is able to survive major disasters, can counteract major disruption to its activities and can protect critical business processes from the effects of major failures or disasters and ensure their timely resumption.

Business Continuity objectives

to understand the value of Business Continuity as opposed to off-site data storage and disaster-recovery; after all if disaster strikes, you might have your data stored remotely but your business will be stalled whilst systems and buildings are rebuilt and data is retrieved

you might have invested in a remote ‘duplicate’ office site - complete with mirrored LAN’s, servers and desktops etc., - many of which become obsolete over time, possibly without ever having been used but that still consume resource and capital to maintain and update in parallel

to deliver, in the event of a disaster, fully configured company applications and data to the workforce, effectively providing a virtual office that employees can reach remotely via any device securely connected to the Internet – and continue to work as if they were sitting on the regular office LAN

a highly affordable Business Continuity innovation is offered as a service subset of the AVDAR™ web based ISMS framework from which it is also managed. Although both the ISMS framework and the Business Continuity service can be managed from the same web based administration application
